Heated Bird Baths
Warm up the water this winter
Everyone loves a warm bath on a snowy day - why not a little bird? Chances are, a bird won't bathe in the wintertime, but they will appreciate a source of fresh drinking water next to their feeder and a place to perch out of the snow. All birds need water - you may not see a huge variety of birds at your feeders, but you will see many birds come to a water source that you've provided. You may even see some birds that you didn't know lived in your yard! You can even entice some of them to stay by including a bird house or nesting box, or in the wintertime, a roosting box so that they can shelter from the bitter cold.
A heater allows the water to stay at its ultimate temperature for birds - 55 F - so that birds can easily drink it and bathe in it. If you want to install a heated bird bath in your yard, you'll need a power source. Most new homes include an outlet on the outside, but if yours doesn't, you can get an electrician to install one relatively inexpensively. If you don't want to do that, you can buy bird baths that are heated with solar power - they trap the sun's heat in special built-in elements in the bowl of the bath and release it slowly during the day and night. You won't see ice on your bird bath - not even on the coldest mornings.
If you choose to heat electrically, you can buy separate bird bath heaters that will attach to and heat an existing bird bath, or you can buy a fully loaded heated bird bath with a heater already installed. This option is a little pricier, but you won't have to spend time installing a heater that may not completely do the job or may break down under weather conditions. You can also buy bird bath de-icers so that even if the water is cold, it is still accessible to the birds.
Heated bird baths also last longer than regular bird baths - often, if water freezes in a regular bird bath, the stone or marble will crack and leak. By keeping the water at a stable temperature during cold snaps, you will prolong the life of your bird bath - and the enjoyment of the birds that come to bathe and drink.
