Read up on your feathered friends
The best way to learn about birds is to read about them. Books tell us all sorts of things about birds and their habitats, nesting and feeding habits and migration patterns, and also help us identify backyard birds by physical characteristics. Bird books, if they have this information in them, are called field guides. They're normally small and light, easily fitting into a backpack or pocket so that a birder can pull them out when they see a bird they want to identify.
Besides field guides, there are many different types of bird books, some that are completely text, others with full-color pictures that are great for kids. Depending on what you want to learn about, you can get a book on everything from how to build a bird house to birding crafts. Children's books often tell stories about specific birds and interactions with humans. You can get books that talk specifically about endangered birds and how to protect them. Check your local library or Audubon society. They will often be able to recommend good bird books for you and your family to read.

- just like it sounds. Has full-color illustrations of birds all over the world, plus information on their eggs, nests, plumage, size, shape and habitat. Includes maps and history on the evolution of birds. An excellent resource for homeschoolers or independent study.
Birds to Paint or Color by Dot Barlowe
- a coloring book for children or anyone else that likes to paint or use other media. Includes 23 realistic pictures of common songbirds, waterfowl and others.
