Squirrel Repellent

Get rid of squirrels for good

You've tried everything to fix your squirrel problem - you've given them their own feeder and made your bird feeder squirrel-proof, and the little pests still won't leave your house and garden alone. You're at your wits' end - it's time to bring out the big guns. If nothing else works, repel them by force!

Well, we don't suggest physically throwing them out of your yard, but there are ways that you can get rid of the pesky rodents without harming them, your family and pets or your yard. If you really don't like squirrels, you can humanely trap them and have them moved to another location, but the cheapest and least complicated way to keep squirrels out of your yard is to use natural or commercially made repellent. Repellent can be a smell, sound, taste or sight that frightens or disgusts squirrels and prevents them from coming any closer to a forbidden area, like around a bird house or feeder.

Natural repellents include cayenne pepper, which you can sprinkle on plants, bulbs and forbidden areas. Hot peppers will do the same trick. To keep squirrels off bird feeder poles and tree branches, you can make a solution with cayenne pepper and paint it onto the surfaces you'd like to repel squirrels from. You can also try apple bitter or lemon juice to keep away squirrels.

Commercial repellents normally use the urine of foxes to scare squirrels. The repellent can be in liquid or powder form and is generally safe to use around children, animals and plants. You can also use mothballs, although this isn't recommended if you have children or pets, and birds may also eat mothballs. There are special electronic transmitters that will emit high-pitched noises, but these aren't always effective.

Whether or not a squirrel repellent works for you depends on the squirrel and its tolerance for the repellent. The best way to get rid of squirrels is to physically remove them from the environment.

Never put down poison for squirrels - not only is it inhumane, but pets, children and other animals could accidentally eat it and get very sick or die. Always call a professional if you want to get rid of squirrels; they will do it humanely and properly with no harm to you or the animal in question.
